Does your business appear in answers from ChatGPT or other AI services? It is easy to obtain one answer and much harder to design a measurement that is useful for business decisions.
Traditional SEO often tracks where a page ranks for a given search term. An AI-generated answer may not provide a ranked list at all. It can suggest providers, cite sources, mention experts or discuss the topic without naming a single company.
That is why a single “AI ranking” or opaque visibility score cannot represent the full picture reliably.
Three metrics worth keeping separate
Observation | What it establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
Brand mention | The recognised company name appears in the answer | That the company was recommended |
Source citation | The answer cites a URL on the company's website | That a customer would choose it |
Presented as an option | The company is included as a potential provider | That its visibility is stable or universal |
Also record failed questions or runs where web search wasn't available. A failed measurement must not automatically count as an absence of brand visibility.
Choose questions from the buying journey
A useful prompt set covers more than one customer need instead of paraphrasing the same question six times. For example, a cleaning company could check home cleaning, end-of-tenancy cleaning, availability by area and factors influencing provider comparisons.
Leave your company's name out when testing whether someone unfamiliar with the brand might discover it. Show the prompts in the report so a business owner can judge their relevance.
Language and location also matter. A Finnish-language question about services in Helsinki is not interchangeable with an English-language question covering all of Europe.
How should the results be calculated?
Imagine a fictional six-question scan. Six questions are attempted, five return usable answers and one fails. The company is named in two successful answers and its site is cited in one.
The report might therefore show:
Brand mentions: 2/5 successful answers.
Website citations: 1/5 successful answers.
Questions attempted: 6, including one failed run.
Do not describe this as “40% of the AI search market”. It is a small sample tied to a specific prompt set, model and date. This distinction matters when making decisions from limited data.
Fictional six-question result table
The following is illustrative, not a real AI Rank scan. Because one call failed, the denominators for mentions and citations are five successful responses.
Question | Completed? | Brand mentioned? | Own site cited? |
|---|---|---|---|
1: finding a provider | Yes | Yes | Yes |
2: comparing services | Yes | Yes | No |
3: service area | Yes | No | No |
4: suitability | No | Not measured | Not measured |
5: pricing factors | Yes | No | No |
6: comparing alternatives | Yes | No | No |
The result is 2/5 mentions and 1/5 citations. A later test using different questions or a different model is not directly comparable. Two mentions also tell us nothing by themselves about sentiment or relevance to a purchase decision.
Why does the same prompt produce a different result?
Answers can vary because of prompt wording, the selected model and version, available source material and timing. An AI provider's consumer app may behave differently from answers returned by its API.
A sound method therefore records the model identifier, timestamp and available sources. If the method changes, mark that on the timeline; otherwise you may attribute changes to your website when they actually came from the measurement system.
What about competitor visibility?
Another company mentioned in an AI answer could be a direct competitor. A cited domain might instead belong to a directory, news site or blog. Such domains should not automatically be labelled as rival providers.
Classifying a competitor requires checking the actual answer and context. A good report shows the observation and the evidence behind it, and marks uncertain classifications as uncertain.
Monitoring without false conclusions
Begin with one commercially important service. Save your original questions, identify what needs improvement on your website, record the changes and repeat the measurement using comparable conditions. Prefer several measurement periods over one dramatic before-and-after claim.
Useful questions to track include:
For which customer question types is the business mentioned?
Is a service page cited, or only an external directory?
Which customer needs dominate the AI answers?
Is the service area understood correctly?
Do apparent alternatives change when your own website has not changed?
This approach helps identify concrete content gaps rather than investing everything in one mysterious score.
Start with a transparent sample
AI Rank is intended to show the prompts, answers and sources behind each measurement. The first version focuses on Finnish-language queries and a disclosed AI-provider API method. It is not a complete measure of all ChatGPT consumer interactions.
